A New Era

Since its creation by the UOC's Humanities and Philology Studies in April 1999, the digital humanities journal DIGITHUM has accomplished its aim of providing an open forum for articles from a range of authors and on a range of subjects. It has included works from local and foreign authors, all leading authorities in their fields of research, whilst also offering the chance to publish contributions that are the result of work carried out at the UOC's Humanities and Philology Studies and by students.

In this new era, we propose to continue the line of work established at the journal, whilst systematising the objectives and activities so as to ensure greater levels of quality and coherency in the subject matter and so as to increase the levels of prestige and knowledge.

Thus DIGITHUM returns, in this issue number 7, with a new renovated image and the publication of a dossier focusing on one subject, which forms the heart of the journal. As we look to regularly examine the repercussions that information technology has on the areas of study and broadcast related to the human and social sciences, this issue, coinciding with International Museum Day, focuses on an examination of ICT and heritage coordinated by professor Cèsar Carreras, which includes a contribution from professor Kim H. Veltman, Scientific Director of the Maastricht McLuhan Institute and professor at Maastricht University.

In terms of the miscellanea in this issue, we would highlight the text of the lecture that the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (Prize of Honour for Catalan Letters) Joan Francesc Mira gave as part of the presentation of the first semester of the academic year 2004-2005 at the UOC: "Speaking and saying nothing, or saying something", a eulogy to public speaking.
